What is the difference between "Global", "1XEV" and "GSM/UMTS" on Blackberry devices?

I'm currently with Sprint on the Blackberry 9630. My network status has been jumping between 1XEV 1xev and 1X. Not able to receive emails and picture messages in the 1xev mode. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Of the 3 (Global, 1XEV and GSM/UMTS) which one should I set my phone to?

Global means that the appropriate phone has multiple frequencies band that will work which all cellular networks globally.

1XEV means you are getting full Sprint voice and high speed data and connected to BlackBerry servers. 1Xev or 1xev means that you are connected to Sprint voice only and are not able to connect to any data or BlackBerry servers.

GSM/UMTS is a 3G network for GSM cellular provider. It allows faster internet connection through GSM mobile phone.
