I want to share folders on a PC that has it hard disks connected via a Fibre HBA, for access from the copper.?
I am basically using this PC as a gateway to the SAN (fibre) as it has an HBA and a standard Gigabit ethernet NIC on it. The PC has bit-level access to drives on the SAN. When I share these in Windows, for access from the copper network, what kind of load is going to be put on the machine? It's not accessing anything from its own system disks, it's just passing data through it.
it sounds like you're setting up a file server. the act of sharing out folders/docs in and of itself doesn't put a load on the machine. it's no different than sharing out stuff from the local drive. it's just a matter of a configuration change in the os. however, anything that would be using the cpu's & memory is what would create the load. such as resource-intensive applications and/or services running in the background. also, if you're going to be having a large number of end-users accessing the files being shared, that can also put a load on the system. especially, if it's being accessed all at the same time. if the nic(s) on that server aren't beefy enough, they'll be relying on the cpu's much more to process the network traffic. if you want to get an idea, copy a large number of files over the network to & from that file server. then, while it's copying, use the os's performance monitoring utility to see how much of the cpu & memory that task is eating up.
Will Server Virtualization Drive the Adoption of Converged Network Adapters?
A recent study by analyst firm IT Brand Pulse found that 50.8% of IT professionals surveyed said server virtualization is the primary reason they would consider deploying 10Gb Ethernet converged network adapters. The next closest applications cited yielded only 12.7% and 7.9% from the respondents. Clearly, server virtualization is top-of-mind for those surveyed regarding CNA adoption.
Meeting Throughput Demands
Converged network adapters allow the combination of LAN networks and storage networks into a single fabric. FCoE is the new technology that allows a CNA to serve both Fibre Channel-based storage data and TCP/IP-based LAN data over existing Ethernet cabling with the use of an FCoE-enabled 10Gb Ethernet switch. This reduces the number of ports and adapters while providing the high bandwidth necessary to meet increased throughput demands. From the perspective of the operating system, a CNA appears as both a NIC and HBA, ensuring configuration and management tasks remain largely unchanged.
From a video on QLogic's website introducing the company's new 8100 Series CNAs, senior product marketing manager John Spencer described the benefits of CNA adoption as "significant data center cost reduction, including lower adapter, cable, switch, power and cooling costs while protecting existing investments."
Reducing Complexity and Cost
For example, one CNA can act as a 10Gb Ethernet interface to facilitate iSCSI, Ethernet and FCoE connectivity. Architecturally, the CNA consolidates endpoint connectivity on a server and its associated switch infrastructure. If a virtualization host uses a CNA for connecting to each of these three network types, one dual-port unit or two single-port units (for redundancy) would be used instead of three separate adapters. Plus, a converged switch would replace separate storage switches for Fibre Channel and networking.
Improved Business Agility and Continuity
The use of CNAs in a virtual environment simplifies network connectivity to optimize virtual machine (VM) provisioning on-demand. Shared pools of consolidated compute, storage and network resources are made available for dynamic allocation through rapid deployment of application and infrastructure services in response to changing business demands.
Virtual machines and applications can move between physical servers while maintaining quality of service, performance and acceptable levels of security. This is due to the ability to dynamically create and delete virtual ports and partition bandwidth across multiple traffic types. By optimizing these network and storage services for virtual machines, IT managers can tie VM mobility to policy or event related triggers, such as networking requirements, CPU usage and energy savings initiatives.
Implementing Converged Networks With Server Virtualization
Server virtualization has earned much attention over the past several years. Industry leader VMware (NSE: VMW) has enjoyed significant penetration in the market and has partnered with leading CNA vendors to ensure seamless operability over converged networks. QLogic (NASDAQ: QLGC), a pioneering Fibre Channel adapter vendor was early to market with their 8100 series CNAs and has earned design wins with major OEMs. Implementing a converged network to support a virtualized server environment can be as simple as finding the right partner.
Irvine, California-based RICOM is a leading reseller and integrator, specializing in virtualization and converged networks. As a reseller of both VMware and QLogic products, their experience in data center architecture and customer-centric support team can help any organization reap the benefits of server virtualization over a converged network. Says Richard Stasior, RICOM's founder, "We've watched virtualization technologies mature over the past several years and have provided virtualization services to many customers. I believe we're going to see an explosion of CNA adoption, particularly in conjunction with server virtualization implementations. For the virtualization convergence, CNAs offers increased flexibility, expandability, scalability, and increased capacity when combining storage and LAN networks. This aids in reducing IT operational and capitol expenses. Platform hardware, management, port connectivity availability, and a cabling architecture that can support multiple converged applications on one cabling infrastructure are considerations are when one platform is used for transporting an infrastructure's sensitive networking and storage protocols."
Conclusions
While the incredible performance of this new class of adapters—up to 1,000,000 IOPS claimed by some manufacturers—outpaces the capabilities of current applications and servers, it was sited in the IT Brand Pulse study as a leading factor (77%) in the respondents' decision to purchase CNAs. It seems clear that these IT professionals see the need for ever-increasing bandwidth in a converged network environment and are willing to purchase that headroom up front. When all the benefits of CNAs in a virtualized environment are considered—cost savings (fewer ports, adapters, use of existing cabling, etc.), flexible resource provisioning, simplified management and ability to leverage the right preferred protocol for each type of traffic (FCoE, TCP/IP, iSCSI) over a single fabric—the evolutionary roadmap for most data centers is clear.
